Calling is the fastest route. Have the heater's fuel type, approximate age and what it is doing ready, and the call takes only a few minutes.
Helpful to have ready
- Gas or electric, and tank or tankless.
- The brand and the age from the rating plate, or a photo of it.
- What changed: no hot water, a leak, noises, an error code or a smell.
- Your ZIP code, and whether the heater is in a garage, closet, attic or outside.
What happens when you call
- 1
Tell us what's happening
Tell us what the heater is doing, whether it is gas, electric or tankless, and your ZIP code.
- 2
Get connected
Your call is connected to an independent, licensed plumber who works on water heaters in your area.
- 3
Arrange the visit
The plumber confirms they can reach your address and sets a time that suits you.
- 4
Diagnosis before work
The plumber inspects the heater and explains the repair or replacement options. Nothing starts until you agree.
While you wait
If water is leaking, close the cold-water valve on the pipe above the heater and turn the gas control to Off or switch off the breaker. Move anything stored nearby out of the way.
If you smell gas, leave the building without using switches or phones inside, and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. For questions about this website or a privacy request, see the privacy policy and the editorial policy.
Fastest: call
A short call lets the plumber ask the questions that decide what visit you need.
